Black vs. White eyeliner

Hey Everyone,
Something that I've been really into lately is defining my lower water line with a nude eye liner.  While applying my eye liner the other day I started thinking about the phases I've gone through with eye liner.  From rimming it corner to corner with rich black pencils, to adding a little pop of color, and now my latest phase in lining, white or nude liner.  Something I've noticed over the years is how black and white eye liner leave such different effects on your eyes, and today I thought i'd compare the two styles of lining for you.

Black liner is used to make your eyes look more piercing and intense and create a statement.  One drawback to black liner though is that it tends to make your eyes look smaller than they actually are.  I would never recommend lining your eyes with black liner if you have really small eyes as this will make them look even smaller.  This look can be created using kohl liners, gel or cream liners, or even black eye shadow! My favorite black eye liner brands are Urban Decay, Sephora Brand, and Bobbi Brown gel liner.

White liner on the water line is used to make your eyes look wider and more awake.  Stark white liners can tend to look a little scary, so opt for an off white or nude liner for this.  Tarte cosmetics has an eye liner called the 'EmphasEYES Inner Rim Brightener' which is a nude eye liner, another option is that you could use MAC Kohl liner in Fascinating, which is what is used on the model in the photo above.

Which style do you prefer?

  4. i've started using a nude liner, i found the nars larger than life pencil works really well, they have a nude color. it stays very long my inner eye too.

i tried the tarte one, and i had a bad reaction, but my friend uses it, and it works well.

i've never tried white, it always seemed like it would be too harsh on me. maybe for going out.

  5. Oh, i'm sorry that the tarte one didn't work out for you, but I'll have to try the NARS larger than life pencil!

As for the white, yes, a stark white liner can look harsh for sure, for a softer look, opt for an off white liner. :)

  7. I've never really been into black on the lower lashline. White liner on those, hands down! Great post! Only problem I have with the white is that it doesn't last that long, or maybe it's just me not noticing it anymore :)
